Charleston, WV – Mary Elizabeth Vernon Carson left her earthly house and went to be with Jesus in Heaven and join her husband, George and many family members on Saturday, December 14, 2013. She fought a hard battle since the first of November, 201,3 and her battle ended at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. Mary was born December 18, 1920, in Glen Ferris, to William Joseph Vernon and Victoria Taylor Vernon. She grew up in Glen Ferris and attended Glen Ferris Grade School, Gauley Bridge High School, Marshall College, and Morris Harvey College. She began her teaching career at the age of 19 at Boomer Grade School in 1939. She later taught at Glen Ferris Grade School and Gauley Bridge Elementary School and retired in 1968. On March 29, 1946, Mary Vernon married George Carson, her high school sweetheart. Together, they raised one daughter, Vicki Carson Thomas.

Mary enjoyed socializing with people of all ages. She enjoyed her teaching career and especially liked when her previous students would see her and remember her as their teacher. She, of course, knew their names and the year she had them in school. She was a member of the Gauley Bridge Kanuga Club, Eastern Star, Glen Falls Garden Club, and her special love, Riverview United Methodist Church and her church family.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; sisters, Mildred Vernon, Victoria Vernon, Christine Vernon Jones, Virginia Vernon Lancaster, Kathryn Vernon Martin, Laura Vernon Quinn; brothers, Joseph Vernon and John Vernon; nephew, Larry Martin; nieces, Betty Jo Vernon Schob and Barbara Lancaster Johnson; and great-nephew, Lawrence Dean Johnson, III.

Those left to enjoy memories of “Gran” are her daughter, Vicki and son-in-law Steve; granddaughters, Heather Thomas DeMoss and husband, Michael, Marisa Thomas Toney and husband, Richard; grandson Michael and wife, Anne; her great-grandchildren, who will have fond memories of “G.G”, Peyton, Laiken, and Stefan DeMoss, Keelyn and Liam Harvey, and Noah Toney; and many nieces and nephews from the Vernon’s and Carson’s will greatly miss Aunt Mary.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Montgomery General Hospital, 2nd floor nursing staff for their special care and to Hubbard Hospice House whose work truly is a blessing to the patients and their families. Also, thanks to Chessie for her devotion to Mary while she was living at home; and her favorite visitor, Jack McClung.

As per Mary’s wishes, she will be cremated.

A memorial service to celebrate our mom and grandmother will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Riverview Methodist Church, Glen Ferris at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Skaggs and Rev. Jeff Floyd conducting the service.

Visitation with the family will be at the church from noon until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311 or Riverview United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 391, Gauley Bridge, WV 25085.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.carlwilsonfuneralhome.com

Pennington Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Carson family.
