The West Virginia Poison Center alerts families of safety concerns with popular squishy toys

The West Virginia Poison Center is reminding parents and caregivers to use caution with popular “squishy” toys and products after receiving calls about ingestion, skin irritation, and busting toys.

Squishy toys are soft, stretchy, squeezable items often marketed as stress-relief or sensory toys and commonly used by children and teens. While products are generally safe, they can become dangerous if punctured, chewed, or heated. Some of these items may contain chemicals that cause irritation if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through contact.

“Squishy” toys should not be eaten, bitten, or microwaved. If a toy leaks, breaks, or seems to cause irritation, it should be thrown away.

The West Virginia Poison Center recommends these safety tips for “squishy” toys:

Check for small parts that could be choking hazards

Never bite, chew, or puncture

Do NOT microwave or heat

This can lead to severe burns if the toy bursts.

Wash hands after use

Throw away damaged toys

Keep up and away from pets

Call the West Virginia Poison Center for any signs of irritation or poisoning. 1-800-222-1222. 24/7 medical experts.
