Opportunity for Farmers and Growers

With so many people struggling to make ends meet, it is always good to hear of ways a person my supplement their income. Mike Sizemore of Sizemore’s Greenhouse spoke to the Clay County Business Development board Monday about such an opportunity. Mike informed the board that Mid Ohio Edibles is interested in buying produce from local growers. Each week they list on their website what produce is needed. Anyone that has what is needed may then transport their goods to Spencer to sell. Because Mid Ohio buys in small quantities, this would be excellent for the average home gardener. Mid Ohio also buys other things besides produce, such as jams, jellies, baked goods, eggs and meats.
A large gardener with an acre or more, may want to sell to a larger company such as Corey Brothers. In order to sell to these companies, a grower must be GAP certified to learn about safe food practices. There is a cost to be certified, but a portion of that cost may be reimbursed upon certification.
Anyone desiring more information may contact Mike Sizemore or visit him at his greenhouse at Maysel. The 2015 growing season may be coming to an end, but this is certainly something to think about for 2016. Thank you Mike for sharing with the CCBDA.
