Commission Swears In Stacy King as New County Clerk
Commissioner Joyce Johnson swore in Stacy King last week as Clay County’s next County Clerk, even as Shelia Stone was leaving for retirement. Stacy has been Shelia’s assistant for a long time and is familiar with the work. She will hold that position until the term comes up for reelection in 2028.
The County Commission met for their last regular monthly meeting on Monday, August 24 with two Commissioners present. Joyce Johnson, the commission president, and Duane Legg were present. Commissioner David Schoolcraft was not present.
While not necessarily the first order of business, the commissioners appointed Stacy King a new assistant county clerk. Stacy was present as recorder, and the commission hired Angela Taylor as her new assistant. The appointment was effective immediately.
The commission took care of regular business. They approved the minutes of the previous meeting, bills, purchase orders, budget revisions, erroneous assessments as presented by the Assessor, and fiduciary appointments as presented by the County Clerk including appointments of administrators, approved last wills and testaments, and affidavits and waivers of final settlements.
The commission reappointed Joyce McLaughlin to the Clay County Housing Authority Board.
They set a date of September 28 at 10 a.m. for a hearing for the Estate of John McLaughlin.
With the General Election coming up in only a few months, the commission approved the number of Election Officials for each precinct as three Republicans and three Democrats. They also appointed Absentee Ballot Commissioners for the 2026 General Election: one Republican and one Democrat.
The next regular meeting of the Clay County Commission will be 9 a.m. on September 14, 2026.
