The Mustangs took the field for their season opener this past Thursday night, and they were pitted against the Blue Devils of George Washington. The Blue Devils brought in a team that looked like they were ready to thump the Mustangs, and from appearances, they would give the Mustangs a good run for their money. However, it was not to be for the Blue Devils as the CCMS Mustangs continued the dominating ground-and-pound style of football they are known for. New head coach Trey Corwell took the reins of this season’s team and has the ball rolling respectably. The Mustangs’ ground game, combined with superb blocking from the front line, took the game to the next level. The Blue Devils once again couldn’t overcome the push of the Mustangs. The defense had a great game as well; they gave no quarter and asked for none in return.
The Mustangs came out and dominated on offense, defense, running, passing, blocking, coaching, cheering, and fans. Torin Shirey was a definite standout on offense and defense; he had eighteen carries for 241 yards, and four TDs. He also had 16 tackles on defense. Brice Nichols went two for five for 64 yards and a TD. Silas Corwell had 10 tackles on defense. Deric Cunningham caught a 56-yard TD pass to get the Mustangs on the board. Most of the defense had a great game with some great plays that held the Blue Devils to a minimum.
The defense was a well-oiled machine and dug in like tanks, stopping any offense the Blue Devils could muster. Except for a couple of gifts given late in the game, the defense held fast.
The whole defense was in on most of the plays, looking like a wave that covered the Bear offense. Bottom line, the offensive line of the Mustangs pushed the defensive line of the Bears to their own end zone and opened holes like C4 for the runners to get through and score.
The defense built an impenetrable wall that the Blue Devils simply couldn’t knock down. It was a well-executed game from the coaching staff, and the boys carried the plan out to a tee with a final score of 44-20. This Thursday they play Sherman Middle School at home. Go Mustangs!
