Many people, one mission, to give. The 11th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner & Gospel Sing is upon us. Each year over a 1,500 are fed and 50 turkeys prepared at Clay County High School and this year will be no different. The massive dinner is an undertaking but the work is worth the reward. “This dinner brings the county together” says Carol Holcomb, owner of Crossroads Best and a long time volunteer. “We feed people who otherwise would not have a Thanksgiving dinner. I myself would love to see people who aren’t able to drive themselves bused in” Holcomb added. One of the best gifts anyone can give during the holiday season is your time. What better way to teach our children about caring than to set an example by giving without expecting anything in return.
Holcomb would disagree and say the reward is immense, “It makes you feel good to do something for other people. This is our home, our people.” The United Way published that adults who began volunteering as youth are twice as likely to volunteer as those who did not volunteer when they were younger. What better way to dodge the trap of the retail industry and set and example for our children than to give what’s most precious to us, our time. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please contact Carol at 304-587-7259 or feel free to show up at Clay County High School on November 24th.
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.”
