The Clay County Commission called an emergency meeting September 16, 2013 to accept the resignation of Sheriff Miles Slack and to appoint an interim Sheriff in his stead. In Slack’s resignation letter he stated, “I appreciate the support and kindness of the CCC during this ordeal.” He went on the say that, “It was a pleasure serving the people of Clay.” Slack declared that he submitted his resignation so that the county could move forward at this time.
Reva Schoonover, current Chief Tax Deputy, was appointed temporary interim Sheriff for no more than 30 days. Schoonover will retain her current position and work part time as Sheriff. “I am honored to be named Sheriff and will do the best job I can.” said Schoonover. This was a historic moment for Clay as there has never been a woman to hold this title. Marie Hanshaw, Teresa Davis and Laurie Scott were sworn in as tax deputies. Commissioner Linkinoggor announced that the commission would begin working diligently in review the 16 applications on file for the position.
