CCHS CAncer RibbonBy Erica Kearns
The staff and student body of Clay High School came together Friday to show their support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.  The human breast cancer awareness ribbon covered nearly thirty yards of Bradley Field and consisted of nearly 500 students.
Organized by caring and compassionate teachers, the ribbon was created to symbolize the courage of those suffering from breast cancer as well as the hope surrounding those who have survived.
The purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness month is to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education. The increase of knowledge about the disease will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which increases survival rates. Breast cancer affects both men and women and can be deadly if untreated. It is estimated that in the year 2013, 296,980 women will be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer and 39,620 will die as a result. Although more rare, an estimated 2,240 men will be diagnosed and 410 will suffer deaths due to cancer.
Please contact your local health department or doctor’s office for more information about breast cancer education as well as information concerning programs that offer assistance in early detection and treatment.
