By Erica Kearns
The Clay County Commission met on Wednesday, October 9. First up was guest Melody Cottrell. This is Melody’s second time appearing before the County Commission in less than a month, each time requesting assistance. Melody is working hard to get city water into the areas of Pack Fork and Grassy Creek in Lizemores. After speaking to several elected leaders and persons who oversee such products, Melody was advised that the water project would need more planning and funds in order to be completed. Melody advised she would continue to be the voice for the over thirty people in need of city water.
After the brief update from Cottrell, the meeting continued with the standard approval of previous minutes, assessments, bills, purchase orders, wills and testaments. A list of employees and salaries for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department was approved unanimously.
At the recommendation of Sheriff Garrett Samples, Gary King was hired as a part-time, as needed, Paper Processor and Server at the rate of $8.00 per hour. He will begin immediately.
The YWCA will be holding a public gathering in the courthouse square on October 22 at 5:00 pm to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence.
Commissioners delivered the good news that a water project in Little Italy, Moore Fork and Nebo Walker Road would be funded through the Appalachian Regional Commission. There was no word on when the project will begin.
The next scheduled County Commission meeting is October 23 at 10:00 am. Plan on attending and become involved in what is taking place in your community.
