Commission President Mike Pierson opens bids for the ADA restroom renovation project

For the second time in recent months, the Clay County Commission has been forced to re-bid the Americans with Disabilities bathroom renovation project.  A recent threat of a lawsuit drew the commissioner’s attention to the fact that all four restrooms in the main county courthouse are inaccessible to handicap individuals, such as those confined to wheelchairs.  The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that at least one stall per restroom be wheelchair accessible, a height appropriate lavatory and other restroom equipment be installed.  The Commission received monies from the Courthouse Facilities Fund to help with the renovation, however, the awarded funds are not enough to sufficiently complete the project.  During Wednesday’s County Commission meeting three bids for the project were accepted; Shamblin Construction at $138,000, Danhill Construction at $160,000 and Melton Construction at $99,900.  Although Melton Construction submitted the lowest bid, the amount is still nearly twice the amount of money the Commission has to spend on the restroom renovations.  Modifications to the project are currently being made.
