Newton, WV – Sylvia Alice Legg Vineyard, 98, of Newton passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 15, 2015 while at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
She was born at Wallback, WV on December 11, 1916, the daughter of the late David F. Legg and Viola E. Summers Legg. She was a homemaker and well known Avon Representative in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She was a member of Newton Baptist Church. She was married to the late Rev. Samuel W. Vineyard on July 7, 1939, in Catlettsburg, KY.
Surviving are five sons, David K. (Patsy) of Left Hand, Samuel K. of Newton, Donald M. of Sebring, Fl, Gary A. (Nancy) of Pawley’s Island, SC, Robert K. (Christy) of Stephens City, VA; and a daughter, Elizabeth Anne V. Jones (Gary) of Hurricane. 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Gertie Paxton, Maude Brown, Flora Paxton, Sarah Cobb, and brother, Robert C. Legg, who all lovingly nicknamed her Pete.
Christian services were conducted by Pastor Robert Keen and Pastor Darius Walker on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview. The family received friends from 11am – 1pm preceding the funeral. The committal service was at Laurel Point Cemetery, Newton immediately following.
