To say the Lady Mustangs are taking the softball diamond by storm this season is an understatement. The Lady Mustangs, now 11-4, have only been really tested by two teams – Ravenswood and South Harrison. The Lady Mustangs were on the road and at home this week against Spencer, South Harrison, and the anticipated rematch with Summersville. First up was the grudge match with Spencer. The game was over before it started, or so it seemed. Rylee Murphy was once again tasked as being the lead on Lady Mustang defense. Rylee allowed just two hits and smoked five batters before the refs said that was enough. Then the beast was let out of the cage and the Lady Mustangs racked up 13 runs before cooling their heels on the bus home.
When the field day was over, the Lady Mustangs beat Spencer once again by the score of 13-4. Then it was South Harrison’s shot at the title. South Harrison is no slack team but they brought out the voodoo dolls on the Lady Mustangs. It was Brooklyn Morton that the Lady Mustangs set on the hill in defense of their honor. Brooklyn pitched a game that, for all intent and purpose, would have beaten any team on the field, but then again, there was voodoo about. Brooklyn pitched nine heated innings, striking out a whopping 17 batters. Folks, that’s over five innings with no response offense by South Harrison. However, the game went into double overtime and when the smoked cleared, the Lady Mustangs somehow were beat by the buzzer 10-12. It was a great game; both teams did a great job and gave the fans their money’s worth. A rematch is set for Monday. Jaedon Delwarte had the hot bat going 4-5 at the plate with, count ‘em – two homeruns, four RBI’s and five stolen bases. Brooklyn Morton, Payton Johnson and Rylee Murphy went 2-5 at the plate. Next up, the Lady Mustangs, with the bad taste of a loss in their mouths, took their show on the road to Nichols County for the rematch with the Lady Bears on their home turf. Call out the fire department! Bats were combusting into flame for the Lady Mustangs in the first inning as they began to hold class on how to play softball. However, the Lady Bears decided to hold one of their own and started racking up the runs.
The Lady Mustangs were having a tough time getting outs as a pep talk from the Lady Bear coach gave the Lady Bears a major boost. Just like a cheap pair of shoes, though, their run for a win didn’t last long. Bases became dance floors, and home plate was crossed like a busy set of railroad tracks. The Lady Mustangs sent Rylee Murphy to the hill to chill the bats of the Lady Bears. She had a tough time finding her range in the beginning but soon mellowed into a throwing machine. The Lady Bears managed to scatter enough hits to score six runs against the Lady Mustang defense but that was it. The Lady Mustang offense went to work and got the job done, scoring a jaw dropping 25 runs in the game against some pretty good pitching.
The scoring was led by several batters who just simply couldn’t be stopped. Brooklyn Morton went 5-5, Jaedon Delwarte, Rylee Murphy and Skiley Wilmoth went 4-5 at the plate, combining for a home run, a double and 11 runs. Lainey Nichols went 3-5 with a double and a triple. Lilly Nichols went 3-4 with a double and knocked in three runs. Addison Taylor was 2-5 with a double, and Taylor Workman was also 2-5 with a RBI. The Lady Mustangs will have a tough week with South Harrison away on Monday, Midland Trail at home on Tuesday, a team that is undefeated, and ending the week at Valley on Wednesday. Come out and catch a game; there are not many left. Go Lady Mustangs.
