Volunteers are conducting damage assessment and providing assistance

The severe storm system that affected our area on Tuesday, April 2, has caused widespread damage across the Central Appalachia Region of the American Red Cross including parts of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. The Red Cross in coordination with County Emergency Managers are providing disaster relief services. So far, the Red Cross has assisted nearly 50 families impacted by this severe weather. If you experienced severe damage to your home, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

During a disaster, the American Red Cross provides safe shelter, food, emergency relief supplies, emotional support, health services and recovery assistance to those in need. The Red Cross works closely with local partners to create plans and coordinate recovery services to ensure people get the help they need to get back on their feet. Our local Red Cross volunteer caseworkers are meeting one-on-one with families whose homes were severely damaged to help crate recovery plans and, in some cases, provide financial assistance. Health service volunteers, who are licensed health care professionals, help replace medications, supplies and equipment that may have been lost or destroyed during the disaster.

“The American Red Cross is responding to a large number of emergency requests in the Kanawha Valley and throughout the tri-state communities,” said CEO Erica Mani. “Sadly, disasters often have an outsized impact on our most vulnerable populations – including seniors and families living below the poverty line. Red Cross caseworkers are currently providing emergency financial assistance that is critical for these individuals and families.”

You can help by donating to the Red Cross. Your gift is a commitment to helping people affected by disasters big and small. Every single donation will make a difference in someone’s life. You can help people affected by disasters like the severe storms and flooding and countless other crises by donating to support Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small. Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
