Eugene O. Stevens, 77, was killed in a shootout at his residence on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in what the police are calling a home invasion. He resided on Cain Road, off Norman Ridge.
Investigators believe four men were involved, and attempted to break down the front door. Before Stevens suffered fatal wounds, he managed to shoot Travis Boggs, 25, of Chloe.
Boggs was critically wounded and was dropped off at the Minnie Hamilton Health System emergency room by his alleged companions in a red Ford Explorer. The vehicle is believed to have been stolen a few days earlier in Clay County. It was later found abandoned, and burned in an attempt to destroy evidence.
At last report, Boggs was in stable condition at CAMC, General Division, in Charleston. Police said that Boggs would be formally charged when he is released from the hospital.
Another suspect, Even Lee Hershman, 29, of Lizemores, was charged on Dec. 7 with conspiracy to commit a felony, armed robbery, and murder, He was transported to Central Regional Jail, Flatwoods, on a $50,000 bond. Additional arrest are anticipated.
Eugene Stevens has previously been a candidate for sheriff in several elections, and was the Republican nominee in the November 2016 election. He was a long-time member of the Grantsville Lions Club. He was also known for playing music and had built his own indoor stage near his home.
