H.E. White Elementary afterschool teacher Patrick Shepherd demonstrates the math discussions that allow students to share their thinking.

A new math program is being implemented in the district’s elementary afterschool program this year. Three days per week teachers spend the first 15 minutes of class discussing a mathematical concept with students (a.k.a math talk), where the teacher presents math problems and asks students to share not only their answers, but to also explain how they reached the solution. The remaining 15 minutes of class are spent with students participating in hands-on activities that reinforce the math concept introduced in the first 15 minutes. On the fourth day of the week, students participate in math games that reinforce basic math fact fluency.
