Mike Sizemore is the owner of Sizemore Greenhouses located on Procious-Maysel Road, Maysel, West Virginia. Mike Sizemore spoke at the BDA meeting on Monday, September 7th, 2015. He is a man filled with compassion about gardening. Sizemore’s primary goal is to get Clay County citizens more aware that gardening is a profitable field.
He exclaimed that he wants people to realize that “backyard farming is a market and is available to anyone who can put a little knowledge and a little bit of sweat into it.” Sizemore states that this business doesn’t require a huge investment; all you need is a backyard and some seeds to start growing your vegetables and fruit. Mike says you could even make profit by selling your home-grown produce to Mid-Ohio Valley Edibles in Spencer, West Virginia. They also have a website that includes more information at www.localfoodmarketplace.com.
Mike Sizemore built his greenhouse in November to February of 2014. Mike is currently a trainee in GAP (Good Agricultural Practices). He is working on obtaining his GAP certification. This certification means that there will be voluntary audits that especially focus on these agriculture practices to confirm that vegetables are being safely processed and produced in the correct manner.
