Judy’s Garden Club visited Sizemore Greenhouse last month.
Members of the group learned about the business from Mike Sizemore.

A visit to Sizemore Greenhouse in Clay County has been a goal of Judy’s Garden Club members for several years. Thanks to Marian Agostino, JGC member, Appalachian District, Wednesday, Sept. 4 was the day that coordinated 7 JGC members with Mike Sizemore’s schedule.  Carpooling was discussed knowing that much space would be needed for the return trip with anticipated mums and other varieties of perennials.

Upon arrival the group was met with an abundance of colors from the plants outside and a huge area with various sizes and colors of mums, including tri-colored pots of mums.  Mike Sizemore talked to the group explaining his operation and all the effort that goes in to maintaining the greenhouse.  The group was impressed with his knowledge and obvious pride in his business.

The group made their way inside the greenhouse to tables filled with succulents, cacti and indoor plants!  Sizemore enlightened the group about the cacti and how they adapt to the environment. A variety of unique plants enticed the ladies to begin gathering plants to take home.  Probably the most useful hint was determining how to tell when the plant is in need of watering.  Most of the JGC members are over-waterers.

When the group went back outside they gathered pots of mums, echinacea, daisies, butterfly bushes and many other beautiful plants to decorate with and show off at their homes. Some social time was enjoyed at a local eatery for lunch and plans were made to visit the greenhouse next spring to appreciate the spring offerings at Sizemore Greenhouse!
