The 2016 Spartan open season is almost over for 2016.
Athletes put their bodies on the line against eight miles and 25 obstacles that dot the trail that test the runners’ will and skill to overcome pain and the desire to quit against obstacles from steep rolling hills to monkey bars. Steep walls, water, and mud so slick you need chains on your shoes are just a little of what participants can expect.
Local Spartan tough guy Geoff Hamrick competed in the Spartan Atlanta Super open division held in Georgia. Over 1,500 athletes competed in the open division race from all over the world for the opportunity to push the limits of heart and spirit. Signing in at 54 years young, Hamrick crossed the finish line first in his age group and 21st overall.
Hamrick continues to inspire those that give into Tylenol just because you cross the 50 year mark. One can overcome as is evidenced by the efforts of Hamrick, a Spartan race competitor and all around tough guy. He proves that joints and muscles don’t always give up, they just need to be worked. Not bad for someone who, according to social graces, should be in a recliner watching a race instead of gutting it out with the younger folks.
There will be no more races for Hamrick till next year, and he welcomes anyone who would like to overcome the daily routine and live a life not tied to a status quo to join him in training. It will not only help you physically but mentally as well.
Congratulations to Geoff Hamrick.
