From Golf Course to Angus Farm to Wedding Venue

Hammack Hills in Amma to host Open House this month

By: Betty Lee

When purchasing Sandy Brea golf course in Amma, West Virginia, Robert and Glenna Hammack did not envision a wedding and event venue. The Hammack’s were and still are farmers, raising and tending to Black Angus cattle.

The Hammack’s are parents to two sons.  Their youngest, Andrew, was attending Marshall University, and they made a deal with him that if he made the Dean’s list they would pay for a summer vacation of his choosing. After the first year of college Andrew decided to travel to Belarus for the summer, where he reminisced on his summers as a child when his parents would host children from Belarus for medical care in the states due to the nuclear fallout.  The Hammack’s and their church hosted around 25-30 children from Belarus over the course of many years.

When asked about his trip, Andrew stated he had a great time and would like to return the following summer. Making the Dean’s list the following year, the Hammack’s kept their end of the deal and he returned.  When he arrived home to the United States after this visit, Andrew informed his parents that he was now engaged.  Turns out there were several constricting laws on out-of-the-country marriage, so Andrew and his fiancée had only 30 days from the approval to be wed. So the hunt was on for a venue, and all the things to put together a wedding.

When he was visiting the farm one afternoon, Andrew came up with a plan to be married in the barn. However, there were a few problems. The barn had a dirt floor, was unfinished, and the wedding was in a month. The family got to thinking, and with some hard work the barn was complete and the wedding was held at the family farm.

That year the Hammack’s hosted a number of weddings for church members, family, and friends. This lead to the building of a second venue building to keep up with rising demand over the next few years.  So now, nestled in the hills of Amma, Hammack Hills offers a beautiful location for your upcoming wedding or event.  Hammack Hills now offers two wedding venues, both elegant and fully equipped with heat/AC, kitchens, and much more.

This venue has recently been under a remodel and is now hosting an open house to unveil the newly remodeled clubhouse.   This event will take place on July 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with staff present to answer any questions about the facility.  There will be a few select vendors there as well, including Burns Exposures, Bowlz Brother BBQ, and Valley Cakes and Catering just to name a few.

You can reach Hammack Hills at 304-546-6101 or www.hammackhills.com with any questions.
