
Innovative robotic technology allows surgeons to personalize total knee and total hip procedures for each patient
Bridgeport, W.Va. – WVU Medicine United Hospital Center (UHC) is the latest hospital in West Virginia to expand its robotic surgery capabilities by providing total knee and hip replacements using the fourth generation Mako robotic-assisted surgical system—Mako 4 SmartRobotics™. This technology transforms the way joint replacements are performed by surgeons leading to a more personalized surgical experience.
“With the Mako 4 SmartRobotics™, I can utilize a CT scan to create a personalized surgical plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy before entering the operating room,” said Chris Courtney, DO, orthopaedic surgeon at UHC Orthopaedics. “During surgery, I can make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute the intended surgical plan with UHC’s newest Mako 4. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across the joint replacement service line.”
The Mako 4 SmartRobotics’ 3D CT-based planning, coupled with AccuStop™ haptic technology, can help surgeons create a customized surgical plan tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. During surgery, the robotic arm assists the surgeon in executing with precision, while providing the potential for better outcomes with less pain and faster recovery times compared to manual surgery.

UHC first started using Mako technology in 2022. Since then, continued advancements have helped surgical processes, resulting in shorter time under anesthesia and smaller, less invasive incisions for many patients. Mako 4 technology helps to make surgical procedures more predictable.
Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase 85% between 2020 and 2030, yet studies have shown that approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery. Mako Total Knee combines advanced robotic technology with its clinically successful Triathlon Total Knee System, which enables surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased precision and accuracy in comparison to manual techniques.
Additionally, by 2030, total hip replacements in the US are projected to increase by 71%. Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ for Total Hip is a treatment option for adults who suffer from degenerative joint disease of the hip. During surgery, the surgeon guides the robotic arm during bone preparation to prepare the hip socket and position the implant according to the predetermined surgical plan. In a controlled matched-paired study to measure acetabular bone resection, results suggested greater bone preservation for Mako Total Hip compared to manual surgery.
