Widen Teachers Attend Meeting
Teachers of some twelve Elementary schools, Widen included, attended region three meeting at Ivydale on Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. The purpose of this meeting was to continue to make an effort to improve instruction in Clay County schools. Subjects reported on and discussed were: “Waste of Time” and “Discpline”. The following teachers participated in the former discussion: Burke Hathaway, Opal Triplett, and Sylvania Tucker. Taking part in the later discussion are: Susie Belle Graham, Ira Jackson and Cecil Friend.
Teachers of region three have already been working hard to improve instructors by having panel and group discussion on reading and arithmetic. These meetings have all been held out of school time and will permit the students and teachers of Clay county to have a vacation from school on Good Friday, March 27.
Grade School Students See Legislature at Work
Pupils from fourth and sixth grades visited the West Virginia Legislature on Saturday, March 14, under the sponsorship of Mr. Burke Hathaway, sixth grade teacher, and Mr. Calvin Gibson.
They were introduced to the Legislature by J. C. Cruikshank.
Those who attended were: Judith Butcher, Richard Gibson, Barbara Rinehart, Carolyn Salisbury, Elizabeth Gibson, Beverly Hathaway, and Johnny Hathaway.
Ashley – Hathaway Win Attendance Banner
Miss Ashley’s third grade won the Attendance Banner for the first time for the 6th month with a percentage of 98.57.
The eighth grade won for the High School with a percentage of 98.39.

SCHOOL / CLUB NEWS
Art Club News
Because of the illnes of Miss Bailes we have a new art sponsor, Miss Virginia Eakle.
We have discussed balance, perspective, and color, but we are specializing in water color. We have studied the works of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Turner, Gainsborough, and etc.
On February 17, 1959 we elected new officers. They are: President, Glen Salisbury; Vice President, Donnice Young; Secretary, Sharon DeMoss; Treasurer, Kay Workman; Reporter, Pearl Adkins; Sgt. of Arms, Brenda McKenny.
We also enjoyed making posters for the ballgames and dances which we posted around the school and in town.
Footlighters Choose Best Actor and Actress
Rosa Gibson, senior, and Glen Salisbury, junior, were selected by the Footlighters as best actress and best actor for the month of February.
Rosa played the part of a frightened college freshman in a haunted house on a dare in the Footlighter’s presentation of “The Ghost in the Green Gown.”
Glen played two separate roles as an irate husband in the skits presented by the Junior Class for assembly..
The Footlighters selected these two for their high rating on characterization, memorization, poise, and co-operation.
Junior Class News
The Junior Class held a big Easter dance the night of March 27, 1959 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. There was no no school that day and there was a large turnout.
The old gym was decorated in an appropriate motif and delicious refreshments were served .
The Juniors racked their brains for one hour and 45 minutes on a test given them by Mr. Robert Higgins, from Glenville State College recently.
Grade School News
The 2nd grade is preparing an assembly program to be given on March 26. The theme is “Spring and Easter.” All the children in our room will participate.
For our Easter project we have made, colorful paper-mache Easter eggs. We expect a surprise visit from the Easter Rabbit this year.
Intermediate Girl Scouts
The Intermediate Girl Scouts under the sponsorship of Mrs. Richard Manning, assisted by Mrs. Jerle Hamrick, held a dance-party at the Legion Hall on the evening of March 3, 1959.
These Girl Scouts are sponsoring one band member to the State Band Festival and are making a generous contribution to CARE.
RECOGNITIONS
Student-of-the-Month
Mrs. Daniel (Ruby Lee) Rapp, 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Holcomb of Nicholas Street, has been selected student-of-the-month for March.
Ruby Lee is president of National Honor Society, secretary-treasurer of the senior class, and vice president of Dramatics Club.
She has been a member of Student Council and she attended Camp Horseshoe in 1957.
Ruby is Betty Crocker’s Homemaker of Tomorrow in Widen High School. She is a very active member of the Senior Class and Widen High and maintains an “A” average.
Among some of her favorites are: color, black; food, popcorn; and song, “Stardust.”
