More than 14,000 signatures have been collected on a petition circling the area regarding animal cruelty. A few weeks ago a kitten was brought to the home of Marni Killingsworth in Ivydale. Marni is known to rescue, house and doctor animals in need, and this little kitten was definitely in need. When the kitten arrived at her home it had been badly abused and was in serious need of medical attention. The kitten, named Justus, was transported to the veterinary office where it was treated for a nearly severed tail as well as other serious injuries. The vet said this was the worst case of torture/cruelty he had ever seen. The kitten lived in intensive care for two days before dying as a result of his injuries.

The petition, started by Patti Lawson of Elkview, says that Clay County does not charge those who disobey the law and abuse animals. Lawson argues “Clay County West Virginia ignores the law regarding animal cruelty. Nothing is done by any elected official for the welfare of animals in this county.” As a result of the incident with Kitten Justus, the County Commissioners and the Sheriff of Clay have been called upon to do more when it comes to animal abuse. When the petition reaches 15,000 signatures, the letter will be sent to the elected officials. Watch for reactions to the petitions in upcoming issues of the Clay County Free Press.
