With cold weather in the air and basketball season winding down, the boy’s basketball team at Clay Middle School has begun to heat up.
On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Mustangs avenged their only loss of the year by soundly defeating the Highlanders of Webster County by a score of 51-20.
The team was led in double digit scoring by Colten Pritt, Grant Krajeski, and Ethan Burkhamer. Elijah Payton and Caleb Atha led strong defensive efforts. Tanner Faulkner contributed two three pointers. Curtis Litton scored four points, Nick Evan scored two, and Tyler Starcher contributed six rebounds in the win.
On Thursday, Feb, 2, the Mustangs played the Knights of Braxton County in front of their peers at Clay County Middle School. The team did not disappoint their classmates as they dismantled the Knights by the score of 51-13. The Mustangs outscored the Knights 17-0 in the first quarter and never looked back.
All members of the team scored led by Colten Pritt with a team high 17, followed by Grant Krajeski with 11. Team defense was at a premium as the usual culprits of Elijah Payton, Caleb Atha, and other team mates made it near impossible for the Knights to even get a shot off. Other contributors in the game were Ethan Burkahmer with eight points, Tanner Faulkner and Tyler Starcher with four, Elijah Payton with one three pointer, and Caleb Atha and Nick Evans with two points each. With this win the Mustangs record goes to a very respectable 12 wins and only one loss.
The Mustangs would like to invite everyone to their last two home games before tournament season starts. They play Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, and Richwood on Monday Feb.13, at 7:30 p.m. The girl’s varsity team plays at 6 p.m. on these dates as well.
Come out and support these teams and watch a fun evening of intense, unselfish, fun filled basketball.
