Lawsuit Filed Against Drema Clifton and Clay Supermarkets, Inc.

A lawsuit was filed against Drema Clifton and Clay Supermarkets Inc. in Kanawha County on January 5, 2016 by the United Dairy Company. According to the lawsuit filed in the Kanawha County Circuit office, the amount in question is an unpaid debt that Clifton owes to United Dairy for products that were delivered to the old Piggly Wiggly Store in the Two Run area of Clay. Last spring, the Piggly Wiggly store closed unexpectedly, leaving residents in the town of Clay and Clay County without a full service grocery store to buy fresh meats and a wide array of produce. Although some reports state that Piggly Wiggly was the only grocery store in Clay County, across Hartland bridge, in Bickmore, Houses Market provides grocery items including many fresh vegetables to choose from. Dollar General, Family Dollar and GoMart picked up the slack with a few freezer items and staples such as bread, milk, bottled water and pop.
Late in the summer 2015, the Stouts opened an IGA full service grocery store in the same building that Piggly Wiggly was located in. We contacted the Kanawha County Circuit Court office and were told that a summons was issued on 1/5/2016, the same day the lawsuit was filed, but no response has been obtained from Clifton. They also said this is a lawsuit that has to be brought to court and that Judge Kaufman will be the sitting Judge on the case. More information will come as things progress.
