CLAY, W.Va. — Long before the first float turned onto Main Street, the energy in Clay was already building. Sidewalks quickly filled with lawn chairs, families staked out their favorite viewing spots, and the aroma of festival food drifted through the morning air as the county gathered for the 53rd Annual Golden Delicious Festival.
The morning kicked off with local craftsmanship on display at the annual quilt show, showcasing intricate handiwork and honoring local winners. Artisans noted that community interest remains strong, with local quilting classes continuing on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
Further down the strip, anticipation built as children lined the curbs in eager wait for the Grand Feature Parade. Beyond the parade route, the lower end of Main Street transformed into a hub of excitement at the carnival grounds. Kids lined up repeatedly for classic rides like the Sizzler, the Fun Slide, and the Ring Knives, walking off dizzy and laughing.
Beyond the rides and entertainment, the festival’s strong sense of community support was on full display inside the courthouse. A massive 19-item raffle was organized to raise funds for Robin Osborne, a local woman courageously fighting cancer, with every penny raised going directly to her care.
As night fell, the celebration moved toward the main stage. Country star Neal McCoy took the stage, bringing the crowd to its feet as neighbors danced, sang along, and celebrated side by side. The singing and festivities carried straight into the night until the lights went down, leaving everyone with shared memories until the county meets again next year.
