Thursday, December 3rd, Tammy Stafford visited Clay Elementary to read to the kindergarten classes. Ms. Stafford visited Ms. Perdue and Ms. Marks kindergarten classes to read “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” by William Joyce. Morris Lessmore is a writer from New Orleans. In the story, Morris Lessmore sits on his balcony writing a memoir. As he his writing a storm flows in, blowing Morris’s writing out of his book and blowing him from the balcony. After the storm, Morris sees a lady being carried away by flying books that she is holding onto with ribbon, she drops a book down to Morris which shows an illustration of Humpty Dumpty and urges Morris to follow. Morris is led to a library filled with other flying books. He is the only human in the library but sees a portrait of the woman he had seen earlier. Morris becomes the keeper of the books and takes care of them. He also gives out books to people from the city who are still burdened by the storm. Morris finally rewrites his memoir while still at the library caring for the books. After becoming an old man, Morris finishes his book and then becomes a young man again and flies off. A young girl comes to the library and sits down to read Morris’s book and Morris’ photo is added to the wall of portraits.
Thanks to Ms. Stafford who volunteered her time to read to the kindergarten classes at Clay Elementary!
