With a new school year fast approaching, families across West Virginia are relying on the state’s school clothing voucher program to help prepare their children for the classroom. However, after opening on July 20, the application window was abruptly closed at 11:59 p.m. on July 27—after just seven days—due to exhausted funds.
The early closure was driven by massive, instant demand across the entire state. In those seven days alone, more than 52,000 children applied for assistance. Because only a fixed portion of the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) budget was allocated specifically for clothing vouchers, that pool of money was drained almost immediately, leaving thousands of local families without the help they were counting on.
According to information shared by County Commissioner Duane Legg, local leaders have shone a light on this funding shortfall to emphasize just how critical it is for our community to step up and support our kids right now.
Witnessing the Need: Building a Parent-to-Parent Network
When news spread that the clothing vouchers had officially run out, the reaction across our town was immediate and heartbreaking. I saw the sheer panic on parents’ faces as they realized they might not be able to buy their children basic clothes or shoes for the upcoming school year. Knowing the stress and helplessness so many moms and dads were feeling in that moment, I knew I couldn’t just stand by.
That urgency is why I launched our dedicated Facebook group: New Clothing Swap, Direct Donations, Children in Need Brand New Clothing.
Our primary focus is giving parents a direct, real-time way to connect and help each other. Through this online space, parents can post exact sizes their kids need, swap outfits their children have outgrown, or donate brand-new items with tags still on directly to another local family. It cuts out the middleman and creates a fast, direct support network right where people spend their time every day.
There is something deeply special about giving a child something brand-new and fresh to wear, whether it’s a new pair of shoes or an outfit with the tags still on. It’s not just about fabric and leather; it’s about dignity, self-confidence, and letting every student walk into their classroom on day one with their head held high. Every single child deserves a new pair of shoes and the pride that comes with it.
While our online group allows parents to coordinate directly, we know not everyone is on social media or able to arrange individual swaps. That is where Brother’s Keeper comes in as a vital community partner.
Brother’s Keeper has graciously agreed to serve as our central physical drop-off location. It is accepting physical clothing and shoe donations and actively organizing them to make sure at least 35 local children currently waiting for help get the exact clothes they need before school begins.
