Every year in early summer the Senior Nutrition Center hosts an annual picnic for Clay County Seniors. The event is free and is usually at Maysel Park. This year’s caterer was Legacy Foods, and the menu included tender southern fried chicken or steak and potatoes, sides of green beans, boiled potatoes, roll and butter, pasta salad, and garden fresh salad with Legacy Food’s own special Italian dressing. For dessert there was a selection of cookies, brownies, sheet cake and watermelon.
While there was no official count, as many seniors did not know there was a register sitting on a table upon their arrival, but I counted more than 70 seniors who attended the event this year. Food was prepared and served by Legacy Foods owner and operator Duane Legg, who is also a Clay County Commissioner. To his credit the food was generous and more than enough to feed this hungry crowd. What was left was taken back to the Senior Center and was put in individual transportable foam carriers and delivered to the homes of those seniors who were not able to attend in person.
Tables were set up inside the vo-ag building because of the threat of inclement weather. The day and atmosphere were just fine, and the storm never materialized. Tables and chairs were set up in rows and people sat where ever they felt comfortable. There was live music up until the food was served.
The entire staff of the Clay Senior Center were there to serve food in the cafeteria style serving line and they did so both generously and with a smile.
In the crowd were many of the faces of seniors seen daily at the Clay Senior Nutrition Center, in Clay, but there were many more new faces. Many of these were in wheel chairs, brought to the event by caregivers. It was a fun time for all. Thank you Clay County for the love you extend to your seniors.
