This year’s tournament was held on Friday, September 18, at the Edgewood Golf Course near Sissonville, considered by some the finest course in the Charleston area. It was a two-person team scramble event with 22 teams competing.

Tyler West and John Wolfe

The 1st place prize was won by the team of Tyler West and John Wolfe scoring a 57, a sterling round of 14 under par. Their names will be added to the Rick Willis trophy, which honors the late, dedicated, first golf coach at Clay High School.

The 2nd place prize was won by the team of Carl King and Kam Sayre with a great round of 61, and the prize for 3rd place was won by the team of Ethan Smith and Mike Smith with a fine round of 67. The team of Jim Blevins and Matt Ferrell also scored a 67, and a hole playoff on the card was used to determine the winner.

Prizes were also awarded to players with the closest to the pin shots on the course’s five par three holes.

In addition to providing an opportunity for companionship and competitive recreation with family and friends in the great game of golf, funds raised by the tournament are used to support the Clay County High athletic programs. The funds are raised through entry fees, sale of mulligans and 50/50 chances, but mostly by far, hole sponsorship donations.

Rick Willis Trophy

This tournament was started in 2011 as the Golden Delicious Festival Golf Tournament at the no-longer Sandy Brae Golf Course, and was played on the Friday of the festival. Last year the name and focus of the event was changed, but the plan is to keep the tournament on the Friday of the festival, the hall of fame induction ceremony being the next evening at the high school.

Next year’s event has already been booked at Edgewood Golf Course for the 17th of September.
