Trick-or-Treat hours for Clay County have been set for Thursday, October 31 from 6:00-8:00 pm. While Halloween is a time for fun and treats, participants are reminded to keep safety in mind during their outing. Here are some tips to for a safe and happy Halloween:
Candy: When in doubt, throw it out. Inspect all candy before eating it. Throw away all candy with wrappers that are torn, faded, unwrapped or partially wrapped. Remember to only eat homemade treats that are from people you know. Small hard pieces of candy can be a choking hazard for younger children, throw away any candy that is not age appropriate to reduce the risk of choking. Also, remember your pets – store candy where pets can’t get to it, chocolate and sugar free gum can be poisonous for dogs.
Costumes: Think safe! Only paint faces with paint labeled as being non-toxic and for use on the face. Glow sticks, glow necklaces and glow bracelets can be great for use to see children during the dark hours; however you must insure the products are not leaking. Do not allow children to put glow products into their mouths as they can be harmful. Children should have reflective clothing or a light so that they are visible to traffic. Never allow children to trick-or-treat unattended.
Halloween is a time of excitement for children. Please be sure to supervise your little ones and take extra precautions to ensure your child’s safety. In the event of a suspected poisoning, call the West Virginia Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 with questions. Hope everyone has a great time!
