Tanner Caldwell gets defensive TD honors as he takes it to the end zone.
Defense was the key to Mustang success.

It was a cold and rainy night this past Thursday when the powerhouse Mustang football team hosted the Spencer Yellow Jackets. This was to be the rematch from last year when Spencer rolled over the Mustangs keeping them out of the Championship title. This Mustang team would have no part of not getting to the Championship game, and they were not about to let the Yellow Jackets repeat last year’s win. It was to be a defensive match as both defenses pounded the earth and stopped both the run and passing attempts. The biggest run of the night came as Alex Grose ran through a gap the line had created for him and took it all the way to the end zone, capping a great run for the Mustangs first score. The Mustang defense was crushing the Yellow Jackets, and late in the game, Defensive Lineman Tanner Caldwell got an early Christmas present with a rare football lineman touchdown. Tanner picked up the loose football and trucked into the zone for the second Mustang touchdown. This run ended the scoring for the night and the championship hopes for the Yellow Jackets as the Mustangs won by the score of 14-0. The boys will meet Braxton on the field at Roane County High School this coming Saturday for the CWVAC Football Championship. Be there to cheer on the boys so they can bring the trophy back to the halls of Clay Middle.
During halftime, a new Mustang Homecoming Queen was crowned. Congratulations to Emily Morton, the 2013 Mustang Homecoming Queen. Emily was escorted to the throne by the debonair Ely Osborne. Congratulations to all the princesses and their escorts who came and surrounded their royalty on a mud soaked field. Once again, congratulations to the Mustangs; we applaud your success and hope you bring the trophy back home next weekend.
In other football news, the Panthers travelled to Ravenswood Friday evening and fought a tough battle in a tough atmosphere. It was a cold night and hard to stay loose. The Panthers racked up 21 points against Ravenswood, but it wasn’t enough as Ravenswood took the win by the score of 42-21. The Panthers are coming close to the end of the season with two games left to play. They will be on the road at Calhoun this Friday night and will be at home for their last game of the season. If you get the opportunity, get out and support the team. They have fought hard all season so let’s finish it with a bang. Go Panthers!
