Clay County Middle School is now the proud owner of six new Diamond Head concert ukuleles thanks to the generosity of Cheryl White. White grew up in Hawaii where the ukulele was a part of their school curriculum. When White was a young student in Hawaii everyone learned to play the ukulele. She remembers standing on the playground with her friends; they all had ukuleles and they would sing, strum and have so much fun.
Guitars in the Classroom, a nonprofit organization that trains teachers to play guitars and ukuleles, helped obtain special pricing from the SAGA instrument company which enabled White to purchase the six ukuleles. Students at Clay Middle School will now have the opportunity to learn to play the ukulele during their music classes and during their Fun Friday activities.
The ukulele is a great instrument to learn. It’s small and portable with only four strings. It’s easy to strum and play chords. The range fits perfectly with most singing voices. Singing and playing together has made this little instrument a popular choice for schools and pop music today. Many thanks to Cheryl White for this fantastic opportunity.
