STEM lab picStudents at HE White Community School have been participating in STEM science labs once a month.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and is based on problem-based learning.  Ms. Kearns, Principal and Mike Carte, STEM Coordinator from RESA 3, designed a schedule allowing time once a month for the students to do hands-on exploration in a much larger lab setting than they do in their individual classrooms.  The students started their first science lab in September and have been working collaboratively with different grade levels implementing engineering applications.  A few of their favorite hands-on exploration labs have centered on forensic investigation.  As students work together they learn problem solving and verbal communication skills, practice collaboration and build their science knowledge.  The students have loved discovering, experimenting and finding out how things work through these inquiry-based science labs.
