Clay County is steeped in honored military service. The community minded spirit that we see running through the threads of our families is often tied to our Veterans. Clay County is blessed to have so many men and women who stood up to protect our freedoms that are represented through Old Glory.

Clay County High School has created a memorial mural to honor Clay County Veterans who fought and died protecting the United States of America. With Memorial Day on the horizon, 13 students, along with their teacher, want to honor the 96 Clay County Veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our beloved country.

Mr. Nichols’ Contemporary Social Issues (CSI) class at CCHS began the project to honor these veterans. The students painted a large American flag on the side wall in Room 202. All 96 Clay County soldiers killed in action are proudly painted to the right of the flag. On each end of the wall are 2 yellow ribbons with the words “Thank You” painted on the inside.

Clay County Veterans killed in action are as follows:

21 Clay County soldiers killed in World War 1.

54 Clay County soldiers killed in World War II.

9 Clay County Soldiers killed In Korea.

11 Clay County soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.

There has been 1 Clay County soldier killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Each of these men will always be remembered at Clay County High School. We thank you for your sacrifice.

Participants in the project included; Emily Breeding, Hope Childers, Shelby Cutlip, Chelsie Drake, Andrew Fleming, Andrea Litton, Breana Mullins, Mary Rapp, Caitlyn Rogers, Shiann Smith, Micaila Taylor, Courtney Workman, Brittni Moore and their teacher, Mr. Jason Nichols.

The class was assisted by Mr. Allen Tanner, Mr. Mike Kearns, Mr. Barry Payton, Mr. Jesse Runion, Mrs. Connie Kerr, and Mrs. Isaacs during the process.

When you have an opportunity, stop by and see this dedicated memorial mural. Clay County High School Panthers humbly salute our men and women in the military.
