For their first meeting in December, the Clay County Commission’s Wednesday agenda was brief and direct. The agenda began with the routine voting and approval of minutes, bills, purchase orders, assessments, budget revisions and estate business. An equipment maintenance contract was entered into with Appalachian Office Products for a copier in the Extension Agent’s office. ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corporation will be performing a no load safety test on the courthouse elevator at a later date. Debora Saulsgiver was voted to become a member of the Clay County Library Board. David Sizemore was also reappointed to the Queen Shoals PSD.

During discussion later in the meeting, President Mike Pierson gave an update on the possibility of a day Reporting Center coming to Clay County. Judge Facemire is a strong supporter of the project and is working very hard to implement a Day Report Center in the counties of Braxton, Clay and Gilmer. To establish the center, the home county would need to supply only 10% of the starting costs the first year. Establishing a Day Report Center could lessen the county’s current $35,000.00 a month jail bill by at least 40 percent. Once in place, select offenders would receive drug rehabilitation and drug testing as well as job skill training and/or GED assistance. Look for more details on the Day Reporting Center as more information becomes available.

Due to the Christmas holiday, the next County Commission meeting will take place Thursday, December 19 at 10:00 am. Everyone should attend.
