The state of WV recently offered a grant opportunity called STEAM power WV. Many of us are familiar with the acronym “STEM” Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  The state of WV recognizes the importance of the arts in learning and added an A for
Arts to Stem making it “STEAM”.  Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics
Clay  Elementary School was awarded over $7,000 to train teachers to integrate music into their curriculum and to help students think and act like scientists. Students will be creating and filming movies using iPads, that show their scientific investigations and they can share their learning with the entire school.
We are excited to welcome back former Clay County student and photojournalist, David Stephenson to teach the teachers how to make movies and photograph student work. In addition, we are able to offer Guitars in the Classroom training for all teachers in our county. And provide ukuleles for classroom use.
The philosopher Plato said, “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy;  but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning”.  Clay Elementary School will launch their learning with the arts.
