Clay County High School 1st in State for ACT Reading Results!

Clay County High School has enjoyed academic success over the past several years in many areas. Increased Advance Placement (AP) courses, advanced Career and Technical certifications, national winners in skill and leadership competitions, and over a million dollars in scholarships are just a few of the examples of Panthers excelling in their studies.

Our most recent reason to celebrate comes through ACT test results. The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in Math, English, Reading, and Science. All colleges and universities in the United States accept ACT test results for college entrance determinations.

Clay County High School students scored 1st among all WV high schools in the area of reading. Panthers were a full .5 points above all other schools in the state. These results are the reward of determined students who want to achieve to their potential. Leading the way are CCHS teachers who are emphasizing the importance of reading across all areas of the curricula, as well as focused skill set practice for ACT preparation.

CCHS students ranked 13th in the state in their English scores. Overall composite scores on the exam rank Clay County High School as 6th in the state. The counties that outranked Clay on the overall score are considered the most affluent in the state. Harrison, Ohio, and Putnam tied for 1st place at 21.4; Tyler with a score of 21.3, and Pendleton with a 21.2. Clay, Cabell, and Marshall came in with a 21.3 composite score, a mere .3 points away from being at the top of the list.

Clay County defies the odds when it comes to our educational performance. While we rank near the bottom of nearly every economic scale for wages and employment statistics, we continue to perform well in educational areas. These ACT results are another example of the true wealth of our county – our schools.

Congratulations to the staff and students at Clay County High School on this job well done!
