The annual Clay County Elementary Spelling Bee took place on Friday, February 7, 2014. Five spelling bee participants from each of the four elementary schools displayed their talent in an intense competition. This year’s participants were: Ethan Burkhamer, Zoe Davis, Jessica Morris, Dane Adkins, and Ashlea Morrison from Big Otter Elementary; Matt Shelton, Grant Krajeski, Owen Nottingham, Ethan Morris, and Curtis Litton from Clay Elementary; Katie Townsend, Taylor Myers, Elijah Armes, Stephanie Naylor, and Phoebe Layne from H.E. White Elementary; Monny Holcomb, Caleb Atha, Alyssa Deal, Kelsey Prather, and Shaylee Robinson from Lizemore Elementary. The alternates were: Shelby Holcomb from Lizemore, Stephanie Hall from H.E. White, Chloe Pringle from Clay Elementary, and Macy Osborne from Big Otter.

The competition began by providing the students a practice round to help ease their nerves. We then proceeded to the actual contest. After going nine rounds of spelling a variety of words, the number of spellers diminished to just two spellers: Monny Holcomb and Grant Krajeski. Monny went first and demonstrated his skill by spelling the word “appreciate” correctly. Grant was next and had to spell the word, “choir.” He unfortunately misspelled the word and thus gave Monny an opportunity to spell that word correctly, plus the next word on the list and thus captured the county championship. Monny was able to spell the word correctly, plus the word “prehistoric” to win this year’s championship.

Congratulations to Monny, Grant, and all the spellers for a job well done!

We would like to thank Mrs. Isaacs and Mrs. Waddell for the use of the auditorium and making everyone feel welcome. We also want to thank our judges, elementary principals, teachers, parents, and participating students for all of their efforts to make this year’s competition a great success!
