Wednesday, May 13, was regional competition time for the CCHS track team with this year’s event being held at Buffalo High School. Here athletes would need to run, jump, and throw their way into CCHS track history, and that they did. As a team, the boys placed 3rd overall, and the girls were 4th in the event. Eighteen athletes from CCHS qualified for the state competition. At the regional level, athletes would also have to place in the top three of any event to move on to state level competition. This year, if you have read the paper, you know that the Panther team has been a force in the track world all season. It was now make or break time. Each athlete gave 100 percent throughout the season, and it shows.
The competition was a tough one for sure, but the CCHS team racked up four regional champions. Evan Bass took first in the 110-meter hurdles and was also part of the champion shuttle hurdle team. He qualified in three different events including long jump. Daymian Stricker was regional champion in the 300-meter hurdles and was also a member of the shuttle hurdle team and qualified in four different events including hurdles, high jump and the 200-meter. T.J Pritt was runner up in the shot put, and Brody Scarbro was 4th in the discus. The 4×800 team qualified at 3rd and the 4×110 shuttle hurdle team was regional champions.
For the girls it was McKinnley Mahan who qualified for the 800-meter run and was part of the 4×800 relay team that was Regional Champions. Sophia Berberich was runner up in the 1600-meter and was also part of the 4×800 championship team. The 4×400 relay team qualified at 3rd place, and the 4×800 team was regional champions. The 4×102.5 shuttle hurdle team placed 4th, and Xena Legg placed 4th in the shot put. Langston McKinney was runner up in the long jump. The WV State Track Meet will be on Friday and Saturday of this week. If you have an opportunity, come down and support the team as they go for the gold. Congratulations to all the Champions.
The CCMS track teams also ended their season at the CWVAC championships held at Roane County High School on Saturday, May 16th. Marissa Atha was CWVAC Champion in the pole vault, was 3rd in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs and was part of the 2nd place 4×800 Lady Mustang team. Danae Stricker was 3rd in the pole vault and part of the 4×800 team. Also, on the 4×800 team was Lillian Goebel and Tara Conley. For the Mustangs it was the 4×800 team who placed 3rd in the event. The team consisted of Sam Hubbard, Silas Starcher, Mason James and Holden Reed. This has been a good year for the Mustang track team, and several will go on to make the future Panther team a great one.
