It was time to burn some sneakers Friday evening as the Mustang boys’ and girls’ teams competed at Roane County. Several teams participated in the event with some very tough teams in the house. It was one of those unpredictable days when the weather was playing tricks.
The event was called to a halt when the storms decided to move in, and most of the running events were cancelled. The Mustangs was short a few runners, but overall, the boys tied with second place Buffalo.
The Lady Mustangs tied for fourth place. However, the Mustangs had some outstanding performances for both the Lady Mustang and the Mustangs. For the boys, it was the shuttle team placing first. Cole Boggs, ranked second in the state in the high jump, won the event with a jump of 5’4” Jackson Stricker was first in the pole vault and is also ranked as a top contender for the first Middle School State Championship to be held later this month. Tilyr Bird was third in the long jump and is ranked among the top hurdle runners in the state, and Bret Smith was fourth in the 200.
For the Lady Mustangs, Natalie Tanner once again proved she is one of the best in different events. She was part of the first place shuttle team and fourth in the high jump. This was a short event, but the Mustang track team is working hard to put CCMS track at the top of the food chain. Imagine what they could do if they just had a local track to practice their events.
They are first place in events where the only place they can practice field events are during an event. I say that so that you, the reader, can understand the true grit it takes for CCMS and CCHS track athletes to be considered the top athletes in the state. Go Mustangs!
