It was eighth grade night on the diamond last Friday night as eight eighth graders would play their last home game. It was a bittersweet night as the proud parents of some of the best baseball players CCMS has ever mustered escorted their sons onto the field.
These eighth graders are like a well oiled machine and have developed this brotherhood after many years of playing together. Weather has played an important role in getting all the games in this year; however, the eighth graders have led the team to a 17-8 record this year so far. This night belonged to the CCMS Mustang baseball juggernaut. It was a double header with Fayetteville. Hopes were high that the Mustangs would take care of business so they put the curve throwing Collin Cottrell on the hill to try and chill the bats of Fayetteville. At the start of the game, Fayetteville managed to bring in a run and the game looked like it was going to be a tough one. Then Cottrell methodically began to chip away at their offense, striking out the next seven of eight batters. He was smoking the fast balls, and his dirty stuff had more English than the dictionary. Fayetteville simply couldn’t figure him out.
It was a different story for the Mustangs – their bats came alive and they were knocking the threads out of the ball. The Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning, and it was all Mustangs from that point on. Bases became dance floors, and home plate was crossed like busy railroad tracks. Grant Young had an inside the park home run. The Mustangs dominated and defeated Fayetteville in the first game winning 12-3. The Mustangs dominated the second game, as well, but had a few errors which allowed Fayetteville to score four runs. However, it’s the final score that matters, and the Mustangs went on to defeat Fayetteville 7-4. It was a good season for the Mustangs, and those that move onto CCHS will no doubt give them a hand next season.
