Once again, the Clay Middle School mother hens have hatched out a batch of champions. This time it was a wrestling team who punched their ticket to the top of the podium. On Thursday evening at Spencer Middle School, the season ended for the Mustang powerhouse at the CWVAC wrestling tournament – basically the state championship for middle school wrestlers of the region. The weather has played a role in the sports games this winter, and because of this the tournament was delayed until Thursday evening.
All season the Mustangs have been harder to beat than a four-legged man in a butt kicking contest, and this tournament would be no different. Seven teams from around the region participated in the event, and as the tournament progressed throughout the evening, the Mustang wrestlers were carving notches in the mats. When it came to the final rounds, Clay had three wrestling for 3rd and 4th places and four wrestling for 1st place. It was a neck and neck race to the mountain of gold.
Here’s how it played out – Christian Belt took 2nd place, Gabrielle Belt took 2nd place, Peyton Rogers took 4th place, Kayden Neal took 3rd place, Palmer Adkins took 1st place, Trenton Neal took 2nd place, Cameron Douglas took 3rd place, Hinton Caldwell took 1st place, and Josiah McQuillian took 5th place.
As far as the team ranking, Clay was 5th – not the champs this year but there is always next season. Congratulations to the CCMS Mustangs for a great finish to a great year. Only time will tell just how good this team will be next season.
