Zaiah Minger looks for two points.

By Allen Hamrick

To catch up on the Lady Mustangs season, they met their Waterloo this week as they came face to face with two juggernauts – the Lady Bears of Summersville and the Lady Demonettes of Ravenswood.  In their first meeting this season, the Lady Mustangs had a rough time against the Lady Bears and this time would be no different.  The Lady Mustangs just couldn’t find a line to the net and broke down on their defense under the net allowing the Lady Bears scoring opportunities.  It is not to say that the Lady Mustangs didn’t have scoring opportunities; they just couldn’t clean the net.  When the smoke cleared, it was the Lady Bears over the Lady Mustangs 19-41.

It was the Lady D’s to hit the hardwood next, and it would be a barn burner.  The Lady Mustangs, still tasting the last loss, were up for a fight.  The JV teams hit the maple first, and it was a scorcher for both teams as they went back and forth on the boards. With just a few seconds left, the Lady Mustang JV attempted their last couple of shots at a win but just couldn’t get the ball to sink.  However, it was a great game, and with that being said, the Varsity team came out swinging in their matchup and delivered a big uppercut to the chin of the Lady D’s.  Both teams came out firing, but both defenses were pounding the offenses at will.  There was no love lost as both teams wrestled standing up and on the floor as much as the ball did.  It was an all out assault on both boards to win the game.  The Lady D’s had just one loss on the season against Wirt County before tying up the gloves and going toe to toe against the Lady Mustangs.  It was a tough game offensively as both defenses played a big part in who would win the game.  It wasn’t a high scoring game but you couldn’t go anywhere and find a more exciting one.

In the 4th period, the score stood at 20-20 as time was running out and both teams were losing teeth trying to score the winning shot. However, that shot never came in regular play.   It was gloves off for a bare knuckle brawl in over time.  The game went into fever status as the fans watched with pure raw emotion as the Lady Mustangs went to work.  Skiley Wilmoth, the Lady Mustang cleanup hitter, hit the shot heard all the way to Ravenswood, scoring the go ahead two points.  Before time ran out for the Lady D’s, they hit for one foul shot but it wasn’t enough as the death knell sounded.  It was a long way to drive just to get stomped, but the Lady D’s had to drive back knowing they had been in a fight for survival.  The Lady Mustangs now move on to the CWVAC tournament in Braxton where they will meet up with the Lady Knights.  A win here moves them on in the tournament, and a loss for either team sends them packing.  The next time these girls hit the floor let’s hope they got the bugs worked out with their shooting.  They have the talent and now just need the luck.  Go Lady Mustangs!
