Tough Mudder season for 2015 is in full swing once again. Athletes put their bodies on the line through challenges ranging from ice water to fire. Steep walls and mud so slick you need chains on your shoes are just some of many other obstacles they encounter. This past week was the Savage Run in Zanesville Ohio – roughly seven miles of some of the roughest terrain on the east coast.
Making things worse were 25 obstacles dotting the trail that tested the runners’ will and skill to overcome pain and their desire to quit or cross the finish line. Over 3100 Mudders competed in the race from all over the world for prize money and the opportunity to push the limits of heart and spirit.
Local Mudder great Geoff Hamrick, fresh off injury rehab, competed in the event and proved once again that age is a figment of one’s imagination. Settling in at 52 years young, Hamrick crossed the finish line first in his age group, and 16th overall, qualifying for the World Championships to be held in Kings Dominion Ohio. Hamrick is once again proving that just because you cross the 50 year line doesn’t mean you must give way to Pepto and Aleve. One can overcome, as is evidenced by the efforts of Geoff Hamrick, a Tough Mudder competitor and all around tough guy. He proves that joints and muscles don’t always give up, they just need to be worked. Not bad for someone who, according to social graces, should be in a recliner watching a race instead of gutting it out with the young folks.
The next race is in Pittsburg in August, and he welcomes anyone who wants to go and challenge themselves to go along. Congratulations to Geoff Hamrick. You’re an inspiration to all us geezers. “Hey, can somebody help me up? It’s time for my nap.”pic 1 pic2 pic 3
