By Clay County High School Football Coach Jason Nichols
This past Friday the 13, ranked Patriots from Independence High School invaded a muddy Bradley Field to take on Clay High Panthers on homecoming night. The Patriots proved to be too strong and pulled out the 42-14 victory. So far, the season has not produced many wins for the Panthers as Clay has fallen to 1-4. Next up will be the 4-1 Raiders from Roane County in away field action.
The Panthers have continued to improve week to week, but the schedule of teams has not gotten any easier. Clay fell in to a 28-0 halftime deficit, but came out the second half and performed much better. The Panthers got on the board with a one-yard QB sneak by junior QB Alex Grose. That TD was set up by a 37 yard pass and catch from Alex Grose to Luke Young.
Junior RB Zack Ferrebee capped the Panthers scoring in the fourth quarter with runs of 16, 12, and his 7 yard TD dash. Ferrebee then ran in the two-point conversion. CCHS struggled in the mud against Independence.
This week, the Panthers will try to knock off another ranked opponent in Roane County. Roane returns all state RB Tyler May. May is already over the 1,300 yard mark on this season and CCHS hopes to contain him and the rest of the Roane offense.
CCHS will return to home field action on October 14, when another new team to the schedule comes to town. Lincoln County will bring their version of Panthers up for the 7:30 p.m. action. The Panther JV squad will be on the field Monday, October 10, versus Roane County at home.
Please, come out and support these boys, as they are working very hard and getting better each week. They deserve your support.
The remaining schedule is as follows:
Oct 7 @ Roane County
Oct 14 Home vs Lincoln County
Oct 21 @ Shady Spring
Oct 28 Home vs Calhoun County
Nov 4 @ Webster County
All games start at 7:30 p.m.
