The Lady Panthers are kicking some softball butt as they began their season. Calhoun was their first game of the regular season, and the way the Lady Panthers played, it looked like they were going to be the ones to beat. The game was like watching a mouse fight a red tailed hawk. The Lady Panther defense went to work, and Calhoun just couldn’t get past it. The Lady Panther offense dominated the game, racking up a pile of runs in scattering hits all over the field in a softball feeding frenzy. When the smoke cleared, it was the Lady Panthers over Calhoun 16-1. Up next was Webster, which was a little tougher game for the Lady Panthers, but they won it in style. The Lady Panthers came out swinging for the fences and were racking up the points, but Webster was doing the same as they figured out the Lady Panther pitching. The game went the full seven innings with the Lady Panthers getting one more chance to chew on the score board. That’s just what they did; not intimidated by their chances, the Lady Panthers scored the winning run to take the game 11-10. The Lady Panthers will play again at Gilmer on Tuesday night and back home on Thursday night against Braxton.
It was the season opener for the CCMS Mustang baseball team this past week as they went toe to toe with Braxton and Spencer. First up was Braxton, and this is always a good game to open the season with. Both teams come in unwilling to lose and pretty equally matched. The Mustangs were the first to swing the bats and get the bugs worked out. The Mustangs had a few problems scoring runs as Braxton got on the boards first. When the Mustangs took the field, it was Joel Elliot up first on the hill to start the season. With his cannon loaded, Elliot went to work. Braxton scattered some hits and reached the bases which scored two runs early. After that, Mustang defense went to work and Elliot settled down and started taking care of the business at hand. It was late in the 5th inning when the Mustangs crossed home plate three times and went ahead in the game 3-2. However, by the end of the game and after a couple of pitching changes, Braxton went ahead and won the game 14-7.
The Mustangs then locked horns with Spencer and again had trouble getting the bat on the ball and once again lost the game 5-16. Baseball is a game full of bursts of action and intense, edgy moments. If you want to see this for yourself, get to one of the Mustang’s baseball games; they have plenty of season left. Make sure you get a schedule and get to a few games; this season looks to be a good one.
The Panthers are playing pretty good baseball but are having a tough time getting the wins as their season got underway. After taking down Sherman in the season opener 16-1, the Panthers had a tough time getting runs on the board and lost the next four games as they struggled to figure out the bugs. A loss to Hoover was enough to make the Panthers light a fire in the bull pen and when they squared off against Webster, it was bat frenzy. The Panthers won the game 17-3.
The Panthers will be at home against Capitol High School on Monday night and will have two more games in the week. Get out and catch a game. The seasons are just beginning and there are plenty of games left. So, if it matters to you, come out and support the teams.
