It was time to burn some track shoes last Tuesday at the Doddridge County track meet.
The CCHS track team went to the meet with one of the best teams yet mustered at the high school. Some 88 students wanted a chance at fame at the beginning of the season, but only 50 were chosen.
Some new runners became part of the CCHS dream team and added a lot of steam to the running game. This will give a premiere chance for the Panthers to bring home gold at state level competition.
Trevor Armes, reigning state champion at the 400 meter dash, returned to the track and left no question that he is the one to beat. He placed first in the 400 meter with a time of 53.73 seconds, close to three seconds in front of the next runner.
With some new legs on the 4×200 and the 4×400 boys relay team, the Panthers will be tough to beat. They have a ton of speed this season; at this event they ran the 4×200 relay and beat the other teams by 10 lengths. Unfortunately, they were disqualified because two of the boys had a different colored undershirt on. Yeah … They didn’t let that stop them, though.
The 4×400 team came to the starting blocks and fired on all cylinders, beating the other teams by nearly five seconds. The girls have put some good runs on the boards, as well, placing third in the 4×200, 4×400, and the 4x 800. Hannah Casto was kicking her heels on the 300 meter hurdles and placed second.
The boys are slinging the 12 pound shot in the 30 foot plus range, and Katie Payne on the girls team is over 25 feet. Emily Holcomb was sixth in the 400 meter dash.
The Panther track team is working hard to bring track back to the map in Clay County. Track is a tough sport. If you don’t think so, run from the couch to the refrigerator and back in under 15 seconds, but keep an oxygen bottle close.
Good luck to the track team this season they have a real shot at some state titles this year. Both the boys and girls team placed fourth overall.
Great job Panthers.
