The Panther baseball team had five games this past week and fared a little better. It has been a tough year for the Panthers, but they seem to have found a groove to work with. They opened up this week against Capitol High School. Coming off a loss against Hoover, the Panthers were primed for bending some aluminum. When the dust settled, it was the Panthers over Capitol 18-7 in a rout. Braxton was up next, and the Panthers, still chewing on a win against Capitol, came out with guns blazing and bats hot enough to start a brush fire. Once the smoke cleared, it was the Panthers over the Eagles 17-7. Then it was on the Nicholas to take on the Grizzlies in a rematch. The last time they met, the Grizzlies just beat the Panther with a score of 5-4. This time, the Panther bats took on a winter chill and must have been wore out from the wins. The Grizzlies went on to win the game 12-2. The Panthers finally got off the road and back to tasting their own dust. It was game on for the Panthers, but they got behind early in the game as South Harrison seemed to score quickly in the early innings. It was a good game, but mistakes will kill you. The Panthers got back on track late in the game but couldn’t overcome the early lead and lost a tough one by the score of 8-7. The Panthers will be at home once again Monday night against Sherman, and it should be a good game. The Panthers will end regular season on Tuesday night in an away game against Roane County. If you get the chance this week, get out and catch a game.
In other sports news, the CCHS Lady Panther softball team has been in a slump, a big slump, finding it hard to get back in the winner’s circle. However, they did have a win against the Lady Eagles of Braxton County. It wasn’t even close as they went on to win the game 14-1. It was then on the road to Hoover and Tyler Consolidated. Hoover was up first, and the Lady Panthers just couldn’t overcome their pitching and lost 14-0. Tyler Consolidated was another of those games where you just scratch your head and wonder. The Lady Panthers had a little better game but just couldn’t get the bats hot enough to score; when it was over the Lady Panthers lost the game 9-1. They will have just one more game before the regular season comes to a close against Braxton at home on Monday with game time at 6 PM.
