The Panther wrestling team was in Braxton for regional competition this past weekend. Here is where they would see who would compete in state level competition from Region II.
The Panthers took eight wrestlers to the event, and most of them had a shot at making it to the big dance in Huntington. At the regional competition, it is some serious wrestling, and the best of the best are trying to get into the top four spots in each weight class. Two of the Panthers made it to the top of the food chain and are heading west in a couple of weeks. Colton Casto a freshman at CCHS is one bad to the bone wrestler at 182 pounds and is rated in the top ten in the state. He was the only Clay wrestler that made it to the final round for the championship. He went up against Colten Hovermale from Lincoln High School. It was a brawl with Colton Casto coming up one point short and taking second place. He will head to Huntington as a freshman and, who knows, may just take the title. Blake Sontos in the 120 pound weight class wrestled his way to 3rd place and will be a big contender. Sontos could cause some major upsets and might just wrestle his way to a final. He is also a freshman. Congratulations to these two wrestlers. Other notables – Jacob Miklos finished in 6th place at 145 pounds, Joel Cruikshanks placed 5th at 152 pounds, Riley Perkins placed 5th at 170 pounds, and James Bishop placed 6th at 195 pounds.
Best of luck to Colton and Blake at the state competition held on February 23 and 24 at the Big Sandy Arena.
