More and more West Virginians are “skipping the trip” and taking advantage of the online services offered by the Division of Motor Vehicles, including a new personalized plate request service. Customers have been able to search a personalized plate database for quite some time; however, they are now able to search and request a personalized plate for their vehicle from the comfort of their homes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In keeping with Governor Tomblin’s goal to make government business as transparent and accessible as possible, DMV Commissioner Pat Reed is pleased to add this service to DMV’s online services portal. “We are excited to offer our customers another way to ‘Skip the Trip!’. Currently, citizens must either mail a form or visit one of our 25 Regional Offices to request a personalized plate. Having this service online allows our customers to check for plate availability and make their request on their own schedule,” she said.
Once a request is made, the DMV will review the personalized plate request and either approve or deny the request in as little as 5 business days. Approved personalized plates are typically printed and mailed to the individual within eight to 10 weeks.

The Personalized Plate Request is the most recent addition to the West Virginia DMV’s suite of online services on the Self-Service Portal. Using the Portal, you can also renew your vehicle registration, check your driver’s license status, order your official driving record and order a duplicate plate, registration card, or decal.
